Russia supplied weapons to South Ossestians in Georgia, and when Georgia finally decided to defend themselves, Russia invaded their country.

Okay, I won't give you a Democrat view as I am from the UK.

Basically this all to do with historical and ethnic tensions.  Russia has never forgiven Georgia for "breaking away" in 1991.  It's even more cross that they have oil (and a nice new expensive pipe line part funded by BP) and they aren't getting a share of it.  It's all similar to the fighting between the former Yugoslavia and the break away countries, Croatia, Bosinia etc..

It isn't really anything directly to do with USA or UK .

Alright let me dumb it down 4 u. Ok think of the world as a school and the USA we are bully's BUT Russia is a bully too so one day we see Russia getting lunch money from one of our nerds AKA Georgia. Now we want to stop Russia from messing with our nerd(Georgia) because that's the lunch money we usually take but Russia is just as strong as us(USA) so we don't know if we can win the fight so now we are thinking of what to do> U GET IT NOW

DOUBLE EDIT:  I think it was much better for me to say "Go back to your cave" than it would have been for me to give you some garbled, unintelligible, half-baked, asinine opinion like everyone else did.  At least, by this action, I have not disseminated ignorance.  The same cannot be said of all the other answerers who appear to have no insight or knowledge of world affairs.  Possible exception: the guy who sent you the article to read.  I don't know because I didn't read the article...

TRIPLE EDIT:  Darling, anyone who says, "I don't want no whiny Democrat..." is not capable of understanding the basic facts of anything.  So don't worry about it....

QUADRUPLE EDIT:  I'm sorry.  That was rude.  But you see, this is a complicated situation that cannot be explained simply.  By trying to "dumb it down", one does a great disservice.  If you were in possession of a "dumbed down" version of the facts, you would then think that you understood the situation, which in fact, you would not.  As I'm sure you have heard, a little learning is a dangerous thing.  It is far better to be wholly ignorant of a situation (and KNOW that you are wholly ignorant) than to understand 2% of the situation and consider yourself an expert.  This is the biggest problem with FOX news (yes, here goes the whiny liberal).  They tell you about 2% of the situation, creating an army of uninformed morons....
