  1. The best bit would probaly be something like a tom thumb. It has leverage but most are jointed so it isn't supper strong. It will work for western and on the trails.

The rest of it is up to you to train the horse not the bit. Practice in your normal bit and use the curb when prepping for the show.

  2. I'd just use a plain old snaffle.

    Your horse sounds fairly calm

and you can do alot of work with just a plain

    french link/loos ring snaffle.

Snaffles are allowed in any type of show usually

  3. you should be able to use any bit

  4. I am not good with bits or rules so I wont add imput there. You proably wont get many responces though cause it is getting late everywhere in the US where most of the answers come from. Just wanted to let you know.

  5. Its different for every horse and discipline... but try to use the easiest bit you can...if your horse does ok with a easy bit try to keep using it getting him to move better off it each time instead of throwing in a harder bit each time... The rider makes the horse not the bit ...

  6. that chick in the last comment that said she got a bit for $40,

if u see those bits in her link that go up into the horses mouth that bump bit hits the roof of the horses mouth and hurts them

and pushes on there tounge pinch taste buds and nerves i hate those bits.

i dont knoww wat type but if u can get a copper one i would get that one they prefer the taste of it on there tounge

  7. I prefer the full cheek snaffle bit....sweet mouth or copper mouth.  It is the best for lateral work, is a gentle bit, and the side bars won't allow the bit to be pulled through the mouth.  I don't know what the 4H regulations are....hopefully someone else will answer that one for you.

I've trained many horses using this bit and anything you could want your horse to do can be done in this bit.

    or

    or

http://www.grissombits.com/images/Large/... (i would suggest this one)

theses are all good for those reasons but show the person that knows the rules and ask if these are ok

  9. If you are riding Western, do not be throwing out "laterall and vetical flexing or side passing" You are reading a English riding book you ride a western horse with the horses head down on a slack reins. There are only three stiles of bits, well four if you count a bosial, they are snaffle, curb, and hackmore. The snaffle is the most versabile bit, You can ride, drive, or race with it. I have use all four on the same horses, and some with just a halter and lead rope. You do not use a lot of bit on a well trained horse, you use leg pressure, weight in the saddle and the rains. I think it is more important to know where to put the bit in the horses mouth, In the bars, that what bit work for you. Try a few, and see what works for you.

  10. i agree with the answer above mine, the simple snaffel should do fine. not too strong but not too dull

  11. You must have a shank bit, Small curb and all that kind of bits

  12. boy you are getting no help here i see..........If you need a shanked bit for showing in western events, look for a ported, copper mouthed loose sided western show bit. I picked up mine for under 40 to 60 bucks at a tack shop. I will attach what im mean.
