What do you guys think? Despite the format wars and "controversies", which do you think is better over all, Blu-ray or HD DVD?

  1. Well Blu-ray has more of the big DVD company contracts, and you could buy a ps3 so that you have a Blu-ray player and video game system.  Not a bad deal.

  2. You can get either of the two at a pretty cheap price (depending on what you think is cheap) Basicly they are around the same price as when DVD players came out.  I opted for blu ray becuase of the disc capasity and the movie titles that they have.  Also a big clincher for me was Sony, I am a big sony fan and love the PS3.  However you have to go with what you want.  What is the worst that can happen you buy something that will be obsolite.  That is the way it is with every computer you buy so why should there be a difference with a dvd.  Good luck.

  3. The war is really over.

As of Fridays announcement that Warner would make only BD movies after May '08, the winner of the war has been declared. Blu-Ray. I thought it might take a year for it to happen but now I think it will be VERY soon that HD DVD closes up shop.

HD DVD was hit hard and is scrambling to recover. They were surprised by Warners move to back BD and even cancelled the HD DVD event at this years CES.

Warner chose to do this because Blu-Rays have outsold HD DVDs 2-1.

Many people beleive that this spells the end of HD DVD and a win for BD, me among them

Furthermore Paramount has a clause in their contract allowing them to pull out of HD DVD in the event that Warner went Blu-Ray exclusive. Well since that happened expect Paramount (and of course Dreamworks) to switch to BD. This leaves only Universal for HD DVD. (Giving BD about 85% of the movies being made in Hollywood.)

I know that HD DVD will fight back. Expect great deals and free offers from HD DVD. But realistically the war is over.

Ultimately the only way for consumers to win is for one of them to win so that all of the studios will make HD movies in a format accessable to everyone. I also expect that once Blu-Ray wins (or HD DVD if that happens) you will see second and third tier manufacturers to make players driving the price to $100 by 2009-1010. Funai just announce one for $299.

They have to make this happen or the window is going to close and internet HD movies are going to take over before BD has a chance to flourish. LG and Netflick have already announced an internet movie device and VUDU's machine is already available.

Buy now or buy later but buy Blu-Ray.

  4. hd-dvd plays movies in 1080i and blu - ray plays video in 1080p     1080p is better quality than 1080i but i c no difference, plus to use both of those u need special discs that can only play those types of hd-dvd or blu-ray formats right now a new samsung product came out in the market that plays both blu-ray and hd-dvd but it is pretty expensive

my advise go for dvd upconverter it is cheaper by $250 compared to other players go to walmart and get a philips 1 for $40 i hav it and its great the only thing is that the HDMI cable cost more than the player

  5. Don't buy anything until the market decides, period. Both formats are about equal quality-wise. Blue-Ray is a more dense format and provide more c**p than you want. Hold off buying anything. One hint. Blu-Ray seems to be winning. Just wait until they do and save a lot of grief and money.

  6. I'm sorry my friend but this guy  is full of %*it! Hd dvd has out sold Blu ray on a consisitent level and Warner pulling out is because of a deal Sony worked out with the studio. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ The war still rages on and will for some time. When Warner sees a high drop in sales of their product they will re think their latest move it has been predicted. Hd dvd has a larger library of titles and these movies are in 1080p as well (for that idiot up there) there are so many sites to read up on this and decide for yourself.

  7. Don't buy either until the controversy is over.

HD and Blue Ray are just like VHS & Beta Max years ago in the tape market.

Get an 'upconverter' and watch regular DVD movies on your LCD screen like they were HD. Great quality and just need the HDMI cable.

    Sarge

  8. Personally I would wait a few months. Let the prices come down. HD-DVD and Blu-Ray are basically the same thing.
