  1. According to the "UP (Union Pacific) Special System Instructions", When working on the railroad you have a chance of becoming pregnant.  That is all I can remember for right now.

  2. Railroading anywhere in the country is a great job with good benefits.  Except in California.  All the UP engines have signs posted in them that it causes cancer in California.

I think reasonable thought causes cancer in California.

  3. According to every warning I have read on products, It has probably been determined to cause cancer in the state of California.

  4. The problem is getting a job for the railroad, working there is wonderful if you can get the job in the first place.

  5. Love it!  I too, am a California native.  Just so happens I started a new blog a couple weeks ago called Red Man in a Blue State.  You may find some humor in it.

The basic problem with railroading in California is the UP itself.  A huge amount of trackage in California belongs to them.  And everyone knows I love 'em, but I would be more concerned about retention of ones sanity if working for them than the chance of contact with carcinogens.

  6. Trains plunging into tunnels is simply too suggestive to be allowed any longer in the state of California.

I hear there is a sexual discrimination suit against the whole industry because it makes some people uncomfortable thinking of those long hard trains plunging into dark moist tunnels day after day after day.

  7. YOU'RE IN CALIFORNIA!! The state's like a granola bar -- remove the fruits and nuts, all that's left is the flakes.  But seriously, it wouldln't be too bad.

  8. The problem is that soon it will become politically incorrect to have trains in California. Trains will only be permitted if they don't have to run on those unsightly railroad tracks.

  9. As a California Native... I laugh at my State at times !! EVERYTHING causes cancer !!  Towns are "nuclear-free-zones", we have legal "Medicinal-Marijuana", yet smoking is banned in several towns.  We claim to be environmentally sound and health concious... yet our gym parking lots are crowded with Escalades, Hummers, Explorers, and Suburbans who drove MILES to work out instead of just WALKING around the freaking BLOCK !!

I ride CalTrain here in the Bay Area for my daily commute, and the thing that seems to affect the train staff the MOST are the suicide-by-train incidents !!  They HAVE declined as they fence off much of the tracking.

I'd imagine the HARD part is getting a job with California Amtrak / CalTrain / ACE / etc...  I've applied with ACE and am still waiting
