I diligently try to use what is on hand.  But, if I am unsuccessful in using existing tools, I'll resort to buying a solution

I use what I have and then I buy.  If there is plenty left I use it.  If its not the one I like I leave and see if my sisters wants it and then buy a new one.  

or if it a specialty item I buy it only after I finish what I have at home!!

I have a habit of sharing my problem with friends and often times, they not only have a solution but also what I need to resolve my problem.

Otherwise, whatever is on hand.  I only go without if the problem goes away.
