So who is the over-all champion in Beijing olympics, China or USA?

Different countries have their own listing, particularly USA who values total medals. Which means, hypothetically, if China has 99 golds and 1 bronze and USA has 2 golds and 100 bronzes, USA still tops their list.

  1. We just do that because we want to be # 1. If we had the most golds they would be ranked by golds. We like to be on top or at least make it look that way.

  2. officially China, i being watching news from different parts of the world and must agree that USA feel embarrass from losing it supremacy from the last Olympics.

  3. do we need to debate on whether the us or china is a winner in the olympics?? this is not what olympics is about!!!

since china did better than 2004, they are happy & they think they are over-all champion. The americans are also proud of their atheletes such as phelps,us basketball team, etc, so according to their ppl, they are a champion. British & Australian athletes did really good as well. All the athletes who have won at least 1 medal IS a champion when they go back home, so just leave it at that!!!

  4. the gold medal worth more, so CHINA PR will still top the list.

  5. well what I do not like about the total medal is that not only does it mean gold=bronze but that it makes too big of a gap between 3rd and 4th. some people say they like total medal count because it is not all about winning but there is always going to be a drop off point. it would be more fair to make that "drop off point" after 1st than 3rd.

3/2/1 or 5/3/1 points system would work the best but then that would make it look like a competition between countries which the IOC does not want.

i would have to say China was the overall champion because they were the best using the points system. also, a lot of the competitions that china was good in, they were limited to only one competitor by rule. (like weightlifting and team table tennis)

  6. China did do well.

It depends on your criteria for 'overall champion'.  The US ranks by # of total medals.  Check the past few olympics and you'll see that we ranked that way in those as well.  Of course, we had the most golds by far those years, also, which is part of the controversy this year.  Some people at the IOC are concerned with all the 'fake' coming out suddenly and the fact that China could be being dishonest about some of its athletes and an australian commentator mentioned that the judging seemed to be biased against the US (one girl that fell off the uneven bars scored higher than an american girl that did pretty well in one event).

All that said, though, every country brought out some great athletes and I'm sure a majority of them played fairly and well and earned everything they got.

  7. It is only the media in the United States that perpetrates the whole medal count thing,

There is no such thing as the "champion of the olympics"  I enjoyed watching the Chinese perform well at the limited events they excelled in, (6 golds for table tennis, 8 golds for diving) but as far as  the Olympics go the USA was much better represented, we medal-ed in many more events than the Chinese and the Chinese did not do well in more "traditional" events like Track & Field or Swimming but when you can receive 6 golds in basically one event (Table Tennis- men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles etc) It skews the medal count, same in diving, 10 meter, 3 meter,

There are Champions in each event but not an Olympic Champion

  8. I think China did pretty well. Having a billion people watching you is a lot of pressure :)

  9. Both are champions to me. Having the most total medals shows that the USA has many strong athletes who are among the best. Having the most gold medals shows that China has produced many of the world's best.

In my opinion, the US is the most stable athletically. Many of those who did not win gold won either silver or bronze, meaning that there are athletes on all levels of the playing field. China is the most capable, winning most of the golds. However, those who did not win gold were not good enough to medal, meaning that China has some of the best, but other than the very best, they do not have 2nd level athletes.

Like I said in the beginning, both are champions of this year's Olympics, just in different ways. The US produces the good, the better and the best, and China produces more of the best but less of the good and better.

  10. In terms of total quantity, the United States is the champion. In terms of the quantity of gold medals, China is the champion.

Besides, it doesn't matter who won or lost, it's that the Olympics are still celebrated and that it brings our nations together and reminds us that even if we have different opinions, we are still human and care for one another. (At least 99.999...% of the people do.)

P.S. Also, the United States doesn't need to find a way to make itself look good, it already does look good.

  11. No, different countries don't do it different ways.

The IOC and the rest of the world do it the same way every Olympics.

The USA changes it to which ever way makes them look best.

There is no over-all champion in the Olympics.

  12. the gold medals are more important, china is the winner
