So why would you want a Derby winner to win over 10 furlongs? Surely the whole pint of the derby is to find the best horse over a mile-and-a-half?

Now you’ve asked the $64,000 – or $40million – question. Given that winning the Derby is the passport to riches in terms of stallion values why keep trying to turn a horse with stamina into a 10-furlong horse who might just get the trip?
