Ryan's answer is enlightening.

I wonder how many women and girls out there shorten their names for ease of use? Should men and boys be prohibited from shortening their names too?

Should Alexanders be prohibited from calling themselves Alex? Samuels be prohibited from calling themselves Sam? What about the Michaels, Olivers, Christophers and Roberts of the world?

Or is this just another example of sexism? We're ok for men to shorten their names but not women?

  1. Women and girls aren't allowed to shorten their names anymore?

Where did you get that idea from?

    Of course they can!

  2. Some people don't like being called by shortened forms of their names. I have a first name that doesn't readily lend itself to nicknames but it drives me crazy when people try to call me by the first syllable instead of using my full name. I have always gone by my full name. I don't use anything else and will ignore you if you try to call me something else. It's not my name.

My father's first name is William. He absolutely hates being called Bill or Billy. Assuming that he goes by either of those names without asking him if he does it or if he likes it is just plain rude.

  3. How is this even a question? No one that matters cares what you do with your name. You wouldn't care so much what people think about what you do if you knew how little they did.

  4. A girl can call herself whatever she's comfortable with - Alex, Sam, Chris, Aron, Lee, Jack.....Some names can really be used regardless of the person's s*x.  It is only narrow minded people who have hang-ups about gender-role-playing, wearing pink or blue, or other nonsense things.  Wear whatever you like and whatever names you like.  It's your life - live it YOUR way.

  5. Interesting question Samuel! but I think you should be able to call yourself whatever you want.

  6. Of course they are allowed!

  7. Never mind Kerenheppech.  I still call out your name in my sleep - it's just your name is all I have time for.

  8. Im the opposite..

My full first name is Katrina.

Ppl try to use Kat all the time..I hate that..I prefer my full first name be used. especcially by ppl i do not know. A few ppl in my family call me Trina...which is fine.  But I really hate being called Kat.

  9. I shortened my name and nobody appears to have had a problem with it. It's not that it's easier to use, but I just think my full name doesn't suit me.

  10. who the heck cares if anyone shortens their name or not? I know Victorias who call themselves Tori, Vic, and Ria. I know Samuels who call themselves Sam and Sammy. Jessicas like to be called Jess. Elizabeth's are liz, beth and eliza. Heck, Johnathans are John, Jono, Johnny, and Nathan.  Women shorten their names all the time. Im a senior in high school. We have four hundred and twenty students in my grade. The number of people I know that don't shorten their names probably amounts to thirty or so...out of four hundred and twenty. I don't know who would ever say or even think this.

  11. In some countries in Europe certain names are not allowed.

  14. I think you're getting yourself a little wound up over nothing.  Ryan is as entitled to his opinion as the rest of us are - my opinion being that he seems like a bit of a muppet.  But, if you are intent on fighting with him over it, just send him an email.  You don't need us to validate your opinions.

  15. What a load of rubbish, because one guy makes a sweeping statement then all men are saying this, and you talk about sexism. Looking for something that's not there aren't you.

  16. Apperantly so... in the opinion of one a$$.

  17. i've shortened my name from Victoria to vicky i know tones of females and males that shorten there name.
