I play soccer for my high school jv team, and I am like the sub of the subs. obvisouly I have no skill at soccer. How ever, I do kick the ball really fast and far. No one else on my team can. I can kick a soccer ball a little farther than half a soccer field. I want a Future, so right now I am considering to kick for the football, team so my questions are

1) Is kicking half a football field good enough for varsity or perhaps JV?

2)Is kicker a crappy position?(no body wants to play)

3)If I am good, is there chance of becoming varsity. Thanks guys

  1. Have a friend hold footballs for you to see if your technique will translate to football.  Accuracy is paramount on field goals and extra points.  It is also important to get the ball high quickly so that it doesn't get blocked.

Being a good field goal kicker requires you to really refine your technique so that it becomes consistent.

  2. many kickers play soccer too. it's not a crappy position. it's very important.  try out and see what your coaches say.

also, ask your soccer coach why you never see action.

  3. Try kicking from a ball stand, then try drop kicking. watch you distances, then talk to the football coach. Let him judge.

  4. nah man being a kicker its not crappy, i'm also a kicker at my high school and its my senior year and my max field goal is from 40-45 with accuracy but if i wanted to just boot it i might do 50-60 or maybe even more, so practice accuracy cause its more important then trying to boot a ball and remember practice practice practice cause its not that easy being front of 2000-3000 people and perform 100% every good.

  5. Dude this is perfect for u... the kicker of our varsity is also a soccer player he does both, he is a MONSTER kicker... bombs 55 yard punts and hits 50 yard field goals... u can deff do it!!!

  6. Questions 2 and 3 are pretty well related.  There aren't a lot of guys that grow up wanting to be kickers, so there just might be a spot on the varsity for a guy who can really kick.  But being a kicker is more about accuracy than distance.  A lot of people can kick the ball out of the end zone, but it doesn't mean much if it's wide left or right.

You should definitely go out for the team though, because even if you can't kick a field goal through the uprights, you might be a good punter and kickoff specialist.  You probably have a better chance of playing and being noticed as a football player than a soccer player.
