i am just wondering if i can use soccer shin guards (to protect my shins and ankles) for playing volleyball, instead of buying $70 worth of active ankles? i mean, don't shin guards do the same thing? well, i hope that could work, cause i own a set of shin guards, and it seems like a lot of $ to buy active ankles!! well, anyway! thanks for any and all suggestions!!

  1. If you have healthy ankles, you don't need active ankles.  I actually have weak ankles and hated using active ankles as it limits your side to side movement.  I'm much happier using a lace up ankle brace or just taping my ankles when I needed the extra support.

You really do no hurt your shins or ankles the way you do in soccer..if anything all you need is long socks and knee pads.

  2. Sarah's right. Your shin guards aren't going to help you.  In the long run active ankles are the best ankle protection out there as they are the most widely used.  However you can find cheaper ankle braces out there at your local sporting goods store.  I've never seen any one ever try to use shin guards to protect their ankles.  That doesn't really make sense.

  3. Actually, no.

Shin guards let your ankles bend anyway and are for protecting you from kicks and balls to the ankles.

active ankles keep you from rolling your ankles. So there might be a cheaper solution out there, but shin guards isn't it :-/
