  1. Social - cannabis usage is socially determined - it is more accepted in college campuses since the 1960s than it was in turn of the century New England, for instance.  Cannabis has social consequences - it is illegal, so people can be imprisoned for its usage - society makes it illegal, or else the legislation banning it use would be easy to overturn. Finally, cannabis usage is surrounded by its own social culture - there are rituals, magazines, movies, and behaviors associated with its usage. Varies across cultures.

Economic - criminalization has made the cannabis trade an uncounted, unofficial, underground economy item. Criminalization tends to raise the price of a commodity, b/c it alters the risk curve for the product.  Cannabis harvesting is related to the hemp industry, which is quasi-legal - there are economic statistics on this industry. Legalization arguments include the tax revenue argument - a "sin" tax on legalized cannabis could increase gov't coffers.

Environmental - pesticides used in cannabis eradication may be harmful to the earth; cannabis is a naturally occurring weed; cannabis is a part of our environment.

    Just a few notes.
