School is starting soon (My junior year) and I'm a total wreck.

I'm so terrified of walking into the school the first day and having to talk to all of the other students and teachers. I'm horrible with small talk.

I'M LIKE THIS ALL THE TIME. I avoid social interaction as much as possible. It's nothing new. I'm jittery and nervous around people, even family members at times.

It's ruining my life.

My doctor prescribed Xanax for help. Unfortunately, my mother will NOT allow me to take them, as she is afraid I will become drug addicted.

What should I do? Any recommendations? Any tips or remedies?

  1. Buspar is a safe and effective drug for social anxiety.

  2. I am getting treatment for depression myself  with a psychiatrist and he says thoes medications aren't addictive for they are design to be use for  long term treatments, those that are addictive are pain killers and tranquilizers. I've suffer from social anxiety when i was a teen like you, unfortunately, unlike yourself,  no one payed attention to me and i'd never got treated soon enough (until this year) and made me a very unhappy adult and led me to miss out on the life i've always dreamed about, to have no friends, to be afraid of getting notice at work, and no one who cares for you.

peacefromken: whe i was younger i used to try all of that you´d recomended and people just think you  are week and wanna walk all over you, i used to think if i´d changed into a happý-go-lucky  girl who´d wore the right clothes , who said the same stupid things everyone does, who´d liked the same c**p as the others i´ll be liked ...i´d stoped pretending long ago i can feel truth to my self yet its still lonely

  3. Paxil is the drug that your interested in.  It is very well tolerated and used for social anxiety disorder.  Xanax is a good fix it for the moment medication, although it does carry the risk of addiction, slowing your memory, drowsiness, and weight gain.  It also makes it harder to concentrate.

Paxil is not addictive and it most likely will not cause suicidal ideation.  Talk to your doctor again..

Also there is a tape you might be able to find at Barnes and Nobles.  It's called " Small Talk".  They can order it if it's not there..  The tape gives tips on small talk, introductions and being prepared so that you are not caught off guard and become anxious.

  4. You have grown up thinking that what someone says controls how you feel. This is just not true.

When someone says something to you, before you react, what they have said has no power over you - is this not true?

It is not what people are saying to you that makes you feel upset, it can only be your reaction to it that makes you that way.

It is always the way we see things that make the way it is. You need to change the way you look at things.

For example - If someone lost their job, they can think "it is the end of the world for me". Or they can look at it another way. They can think "what a wonderful opportunity I now have to find a better job, one that I love and more money".

If someone doesn't "like you", you can think "woe is me, I'm very unpopular without any friends". Or you can think "thank you my friend for showing me that I need to love myself more, so that you can love me".

If you want something – give it away.

If you want anything, you have to give it away first.

If you want to be loved or liked by others, - you have to like or love others.

If you want friends - you have to give friendship to others.

if you want happiness - you have to give happiness to others.
