  1. JimmyJazz is dead on, but MUST add:

Since the poor deserved what they got, government could not and should not help them - social welfare (eg, employment insurance, medicare, pensions) would do more harm than good.  It would be better to NOT help poor people at all - their suffering was the best incentive for them to change.

  3. It's the idea that various races of the human species develops differently to other races (eg whites v blacks) and become better adapted and functioning than the other races - eg the old British imperialist idea was that the white Europeans were more advanced and civilised than the 'savage' races they held rule over when there was an Empire.

However the thesis was severely damaged by the events of the Second Boer War, where white British people in England were abhorred by the way the white Boer civilians were incarcerated in concentration camps by British soldiers during their 'scorched earth' campaign.

  4. Social Darwinism was the idea that survival of the fittest applied to society.  That is, poor people were poor because they were incapable of bettering themselves and essentially deserved what they got.  If the poor would just work harder they would become better off.  And if they didn't it was their own fault.

  5. Here's a Quote:

"The British attitude is to treat society like a game preserve

where a certain percentage of the 'antelope' are expected

to be eaten by the 'lions`. - Christopher Morton
