Social Security Card question.?

OK, so my daughter got married. Went to the DMV in Texas and got her name changed on her drivers license. She was told by the DMV agent that she was required to destroy the old license because it was illegal to have 2 different names on ID's. Then few weeks later she went to apply for a change of social security card to her new name and they told her she cannot change it because she does not have picture ID with her old name on it. That is because the DMV told her to destroy it!!!! She trusted them and so did not inquire to me what she should do. I would have told her to cut a corner off the card and save it in a secure place. She has no other ID with her maiden name and a picture on it. She is stuck between a rock and a hard place, and a victim of the Red Tape of government burocracy. Anyone have any ideas or information on what she can do to get her SS card changed to her married name?

  1. Identity

    We can accept only certain documents as proof of identity. For example, as proof of identity Social Security must see:

    U.S. driver’s license;

    State-issued nondriver identification card; or

    U.S. passport.

    If you do not have one of these specific documents or you cannot get a replacement for one of them within 10 days, we will ask to see other documents, including:

    Employee ID card;

    School ID card;

    Health insurance card (not a Medicare card);

    U.S. military ID card; or

    Adoption decree.

    Your new card will have the same number as your previous card, but will show your new name. We will mail your card as soon as we have all of your information and have verified your documents.

    Keep your Social Security card in a safe place. It is an important document. Do not carry it with you.

  2. It is really not necessary that she change her name with the SS administration.  They use the number as identification. When she goes to draw her SS they will need her birth certificate and that too has her maiden name. She may also need to take her marriage certificate.

  3. Will they accept a yearbook picture, along with a birth certificate?

  4. A birth certificate will work.  Sh is not a victim of anything.  Both agencies are doing what is required to keep people from stealing identities.
