Can I receive money from social security or any program like that at the age of sixteen? I have a neurological birth defect called spina bifida and I have lots of things that have to be paid for. But my parents make a good bit of money like 100k combined a year but I feel bad because I have lots of siblings and there are still so many things they have to pay for me to have.

If there isn't anything I guess I'll just work during the summer but I just don't want to get anymore behind in school then I already am due to problems because of my spina bifida.

  1. Your parents should call the social security office. I would think your parents could get some supplemental income from your spina bifida. Do you go to school in the summer? If you don't, then a summer part-time job would also help with your finance situation.

    Best of Luck,

  2. As far as Social Security benefits go, the answer would unfortunately be no. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) would also be no, since your parents earn 100k, unless you have around 12 siblings that are all under the age of 18. Even then you would only be eligible for a small amount. Most of the programs that are available are going to be based off of income. You can contact your state human services department to see if they have any programs available. You might also want to see if there is an organization for spina bifida that might be able to assist you.

    Good luck!
