Question:

Social Security pensions... What if i get a job?

I'm turning 16 years old very soon, and I was wondering if my SSA benefits will be reduced or taken away if I was to get a part-time job. My father passed away a few years ago, and since then my family has been recieving survivor's benefits from the Social Security Administration.

My mom recently got a new job, and her benefits from the SSA has been taken away, but they have increased me and my brother's monthly pensions.

She's worried that me opening a bank account and getting a job to help pay the bills and maybe getting a car will cause SSA to take away my portion of the benefits.

I just feel that at my age I should be practicing to be more independent, i.e. getting a job, buying a car, paying for my part of the cell phone bill, etc etc.

Any help would be great! Details are appreciated! Thanks!

  1. What does your SSA office say about that? Get an official answer so that you will not be penalize later. I believe that a limited amount of money can be earned without any deductions. Yes, you do have to start contributing to the family debts. Find out answers and go for it.

  2. you should ask ssa that question.  at your age i don't think you need a car when your family debts are bad.  a car is only another debt. you need gas, oil changes, etc.  as far as a cell phone, do you really need it.  that could be your contribution to the family debts.  i know everyone has a cell these days but believe me when i was 16 there were no such things as cell phones and we made it ok.
