  1. Most social workers do need to have earned a master's degree (MSW) and that may also allow them to work in private practice (and possibly get health insurance reimbursement for clients) after getting work experience.  The pay is not supposed to be great and the social work/mental health field tends to have a high burn-out rate as with nursing.

For general career info:  http://www.bls.gov/oco and can search 'social workers' or such.  Additional websites should be listed at the end of the entry.

Please steer clear of those online, for-profit schools such as penn foster, capalla, university of phoenix, kaplan and others as they are merely out to 'make a profit':  http://www.capellauniversitysucks.us

http://www.ripoffreport.com and can type into search.

    US colleges:  http://www.utexas.edu/world/univ

  2. I work at a nursing home and there is a social worker employed there full time. She is very friendly and seems to enjoy her job, I have gone to her regarding an ethical work dilemma at work. She has a bachelor's degree in Social Work and she took the test to get certified. Many social workers have Master's degrees but you can make it without one. I don't know what it pays or how the outlook is in North California.

    Good luck!
