  2. Here's a more comprehensive list of the British system:

    King/Queen

Crown Prince/Crown Princess e.g. Prince of Wales (next in line to monarchy)

Prince/Princess - the highest female one is Princess Royal (eldest daughter of monarch, or previous monarch as title is for life and held by one at a time)

    Royal Duke/Royal Duchess

    Duke/Duchess

    Marquess/Marchioness

Earl/Countess (Earl is British equivalent of Count)

    Viscount/Viscountess

    Baron/Baroness

Knight/Dame of the Order of the Garter (non-heriditary)

    Baronet/Baronetess (effectively a heriditary knight)

    Knight/Dame of other orders (non-heriditary)

    Esquire/Gentlewoman (orignally upper gentry)

    Gentleman/Gentlewoman (originally lower gentry)

Peasants in medieval times were divided into

    1. Freemen -about 10% of peasants in 11th century England which was high in comparrison to many other countries

    2. Serfs divided into

    a) Villeins -the most common type of serf with some work expected as payment to feudal lord but otherwise free, although lord's work took precedence

    b) Cottars (Cottagers) those with home and gardens on land working for lord.

    c) Slaves - the lowest order

Note Serfs could not be bought and sold like in Roman times or the old US South, but if land was sold then the serfs came with it.

The title of Lady is a form of address equivalent to that of Lord (any member of the nobility such as Lord X, Viscount of Y) or the wife of a knight.
