What's a good way to start a conversation?

Haha, did you watch ( insert movie, tv show or other programme here) the other night?

If they did, let it flow..

If they didn't tell them about it.. but don't bore them.

It depends on the people, and the context.

"Hey! How's it going?" is an all-purpose conversation starter.

But if you have something in common -- classes, say, then either making a commment and inviting response to something about that common thing, or asking a question about it are good.

Then there's commenting on something that's going on right then and there -- weather, length of the line you're in, or whatever.

Do NOT go for "lines" (like the polar bear one someone else gave). Those are lame.

The main thing is, give the person an opening to talk to you. Then pay attention to their reaction; if they don't want to talk, or talk to you, or talk right then, don't press it.

If they do, listen to what they say, and respond -- with your reaction to what they've said, with follow-up questions.

usually get them talking about work or a hobby that way it sparks a conversation not just a one word answer

Depends who you are talking to. If you want to make a new friend (yeah..that sounds pretty corny..lol) then just compliment them on something....that is always a good convo starter..lol

If you are talking to a superior, say hello, how are you doing today?...or something along those lines. Just relax and be yourself! If your talking to a stranger....just like...ask about something pretty obvious. Like, first make eye contact and be like..."Did you see the b-ball game yesterday?" or if you want to go out with someone...again, make eye contact and first comment on the weather...(yeah, that actually works) and then say something funny =)) oh...don't forget to compliment them =)) it really works...

but, i guess you should always get the formalities out of the way..like hi, and my name is....

Hello I'm a big deusche bag that can't talk to people so ask people how to talk to people cause I can't talk to people unless there on a chatline.

Jus start by sayin "hi" then ask them how their doin and stuff.

Ask someone where they are from, or what they do on the weekends. I like to talk about music too. If you know what they like to do, you can move from there and ask questions if you are not familiar with their hobbies, or you can share similar experiences.

Ask an open question. That is to say, ask a question wich can't be answered with a simple yes or no. Be interested in the answer and don't make too much eye contact when they're speaking
