i'm 16 and i'm leaving school this year. i have decided that what ever i do i'm going to do an apprenticeship.I've always wanted to be a social worker. I want to help find housing for people and help them with other financial needs. I was told to do an apprenticeship in health and social care. When went into the training centre i was told that i'll have to work in a residential home; however i don't want to work their for my placement. What shall i do?? can you do an apprenticeship in heath and social care in the council???? please help.

  1. go to a different training center and see where they place you. Even if it's not the ideal job it's just for training.

  2. I suspect that training in health and social care only qualifies you to be a care worker, and not a social worker as such who is also involved in decision making.  I think that you need a degree to become a social worker.  If you don't want to do A levels you have the option of working for a few years in health and social care and then applying for an access course, usually a year, which will enable you to apply to university.

If you want to work in housing look at your local council's website to see what qualifications are needed for jobs and whether they have any training schemes in partnership with local colleges.

  3. To be a social worker you need a minimum of a BSW (Bachelor degree) and really you will probably want an MSW (masters degree). What makes a social work degree unique is the amount of required internship (similar to an apprenticeship).  You can't just do an apprenticeship to be a social worker - you will need to go to college.  Now you can leave H.S. and get a GED and then go to a community college - but you will probably be better served by staying in H.S.  Now you may be able to find a job as an aid (which is what it sounds like you are describing).  However, you will not really be able to realize your goal of helping people find housing and financial aid.

    DA

  4. Ive never heard of that. Thats what i want to do as well. Im going to actually look into that because i didnt know you could do that w/o any college or anything.

If you find anything else out, let me know.

    THank You =)

  5. I'm 26 and just decided that's what I want to do with my life too! I volunteer for a local homeless charity and this is a great way to meet people who are in that line of work who will be able to help you out! I am just waiting and waiting to hear back from applications!!

What do you mean by training centre? You mean job centre? Maybe they think you want to work in an old people's home?!?!?!?

You should look for your local council online, search for their recruitment section and look to see who you need to contact in HR, give them a call about people to contact about doing a work placement with them and go from there!

Really though, get yourself some volunteering in a local shelter...it is extremely difficult so please don't think it'll be easy. But it really is fun and such a rewarding thing to do. Make sure you tell them your age as I'm not sure if they'll have a problem with it!

But at the end of it all you need qualifications, so stay on at school, go to uni and get the job you want!

    Good luck with everything!

  6. to be honest i would go to a sixth form college and try and get a levels.

this would give you more qualifications and widen your choices. hope this helps =]
