Society Rock to take down Black Caviar, Krypton Factor and Moonlight Cloud while defending her title in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes
To have stood second and first in the Group 1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes (British Champions Series & Global Sprint Challenge) in the last two years is, Society Rock.
The five-year-old is racing the six furlongs for a third straight year now, and this time he will have to confront fourteen other contestants. The winner gets to take home the £283,550 prize money.
Rock Of Gibraltar’s five-year-old bay horse out of mare, High Society, finished second in 2010.
The contestants back then were twenty-four, and the Group 1 was won by the 13 to 2 joint favourite, Starspangledbanner, who had Johnny Murtagh onboard.
Society Rock was guided through the track by Pat Cosgrave, while Kinsale King filled up the third slot.
The other joint favourite of the race, Fleeting Spirit, concluded the race in fourth, coupled with jockey, Richard Hughes.
After a year’s gap the race was won by the High Society foaled, Society Rock. He was again accompanied by Pat Cosgrave, who led the runner up, Monsieur Chevalier, by just half-length.
Thus, after a very close encounter, that the five-year-old got to win the title.
Last year’s 3 to 1 favourite of the race, Bewitched, ended fourteenth in a field set for sixteen.
That actually was the last time that, Society Rock, won a race and he has raced just once ever since the new season took off.
James Fanshawe’s charge ended third in the Group 2 Duke Of York Totepool Stakes on 16th May at York over a distance of six furlongs.
He will be accompanied by rider Johnny Murtagh in this year's Diamond Jubilee Stakes, and is backed up by 12/1 odds.
His fiercest rival in the race is the undisputed Australian mare, Black Caviar who will be vying for her twenty-second consecutive vicotry at 1 to 4.
Krypton Factor, with 28 to1, is the one to look out for, and he will be looking to finish close to the Australian invader, Black Caviar, who will make it extremely hard to win the contest.
Moonlight Cloud, heading with 6 to 1 is another entry with all the potential to upset, Society Rock.
He is experienced enough to finish first and second in the six furlong sprint, but if he gets the honour against his name for the second time, it will be news thats for sure.
