It sounds like you could find some of these answers in an intro-to-sociology textbook.

as for the more recent sociologists and their studies, try looking in a sociological academic journal at your library.

btw, sociologists mostly do empirical research (video equipment, pencil, paper, voice recorder), and if they're analyzing data from questionnaires then they might use the computer program SPSS.
