The number of people living on heir own has increased over recent years. Identify and explain ONe reason for this change?

To what extent would sociologists agree that the married couple family is no longer the typical family?

  1. Not sure about the first one. For the second, one could argue that the married couple family is now abnormal in a sense compared to unmarried or single parent families. Times change, expectaions change, norms change.

Perhaps the reason more people are living on their own (I'm assume you mean alone) is that more and more people are waiting to get married (if they marry at all), but wish to be more independent of their parents/guardians sooner. In a nutshell - the desire for independence and self-reliance. It's a known fact that women and men are delaying marriage for various reasons, the main one for women being starting a career first. And there is a sort of stigma attached to living with the parents post-high school or college. Though living on your own is probably not the most financially ideal situation, it is the ideal situation in all other regards - you have privacy, complete authority, and you're self-sufficient.

    And a reason sociologists would agree that the married couple family is no longer the norm is because of the increase in cohabitation and single-parent families. The divorce rate has increased, more and more people are choosing to not get married, but still live together and have families.
