Sociological perspectives and politics?

I'm doing a project on the sociological perspectives and politics and I need some suggestions on how to approach it. What examples could I use to demonstrate how the functionalist and conflict theory perspectives explain politics? The conflict theorists believe that the big corporations of the U.S. control politics. What would be a good way to explain that with current event examples?

We have an election going on right now... and lots of people and companies are taking sides... try looking into that more... I agree with that perspective.
