Question:

Sociology B.A. Good for Nothing?

I earned my B.A. in Sociology in 1994. The degree has done nothing for me in terms of employment.

What good is a Sociology B.A. if I cannot use it to find employment?

Is anyone in the same situation? If so, would you share your story with me?

  1. There are plenty of jobs out there for people with B.A.'s in sociology. Maybe you are not looking in the right place or do not like your job options. The government is a big employer of sociology graduates. Perhaps you should look there. Or maybe you should look at social services jobs.

Although it is true that you are not going to open up the paper and read "Sociologists Wanted", that does not mean there are not jobs for them.  Sociology is a broad degree that allows you to work in many different areas. Some of those areas are:

    Court Advocate/Legal Arena

    Job and Family services

    Housing Authorities

    Market Research

Social Service Agencies (i.e. YWCA, Homeless shelters, Drug and Alcohol Agencies)

    Criminal Investigations/ Probation/Corrections

    Activist Agencies

and numerous government agencies (too many to list here)

Don't get discouraged, do some soul searching and figure out what you want to do.  Best of luck to you.

  2. the ba just uses any discipline to train your mind. has little or no direct connection with employment.

  3. I graduated with a BA in Sociology and Psychology over a year ago and still havent found a real job.  However, I value greatly what I learned.  Sociology teaches you a lot about society and culture and human interaction, which is really interesting to me.  It may not guarantee you a job, but it helps you out no matter what job you find.
