Addiction IMHO. My ex-gf was a gambling addict, which was a first for me since my whole entire extended family on both sides gamble, I had just thought it something no one would be or could be addicted to...till I spent some time with her at the casino, and getting there for $50 via taxi and waiting hours for the bus back  to the city....

You could base your topic on different variables that you think may lead to gambling, such as marital status, age, s*x, type of nuclear family (single-parent, divorced, blended, etc), geographical location, or whatever else you can think of that may have a relationship with the act of gambling/having a gambling problem.  You could send out surveys with different questions about your respondents backgrounds and their gambling habits and see if there are any obvious patterns.  You could also access previous studies about gambling and analyze them (this is called secondary analysis, since it isn't your own data that you are analyzing.).

The desperation of people that leads them to gamble and the difficulties accepting that you will probabaly never win back what you lost. You can also examine the blow to your self-worth/self-esteem when you lose your money.
