what sociological concepts can be used with stereotyping?

Due to stereotypes nowadays, I am constantly self-consious and always trying to please my peers. I am still and school. I just read a quote in a book that stated: "Care about what other people think about you and you will always be their prisoner."

This quote really hit me in the gut. I never empathized it this way. Now I see newer aspects. I just wanted to say this :)

Conceptually or theoretically there are a few things that apply.  There is labeling theory a great thing to use.  The big three structural functionalism, conflict, and symbolic interaction all have aspects that view stereotyping in different ways.
