Sociology help....AS Families and Households?

hey all!

i am resiting the Families and Household module 2 weeks tomorrow and cannot find my notes on the warm bath theory.

Can anyone tell me what the Warm Bath theory is and who said it...i think it was Parson but not sure.

  1. Talcott Parsons described the family as a warm bath, because he believed that the family helps to relieve stress and tension from work, and helps adults personalisities stabilise, and make the family members content.

    --Socialization of Children

    --Stabilization of Adult Personalities

    The family functions in an over-romantic and idealized way.

    This referred to as the ‘warm bath theory’ of family.

    Both Murdock and Parsons reflect the functionalist perspective on family functions.
