  1. i have my BA in sociology and am currently working on my master's in soc, and it's  not nearly as limited as people will tell you. you can go into different forms of social research including working for governmental organizations. i know people who work on family research and work on public policy. i know people who are gender and LGBT activists. i know other people who work closely with organizations that work in the field of aging. you can go a medical route, you can work with the military, pursue a legal career. it's not a worthless degree you just have to know how to spin it and what your concentrate is.

  2. ihave a BA in sociology, it is worthless :) unless you want to work for a nonprofit org working 70 hours a week for 25k a year, or work the night shift at a troubled teen center for 20k a year...... you have to get your masters or phd and teach it or be a social worker, which will get you about 35k a year.....

but it is really interesting and I loved studying it, especially sociological theory!

  3. an MSW is a Masters in Social Work not a degree in sociology.  I think a career option for sociology majors are research or teaching.  I am a MSW, and sociology was my first love- I just couldn't find anything that interested me with that degree.  My degree in Social Work allows me to do such a variety of things- look into that program as a choice.  Good luck!!

  4. You would have to go for the MSW to get anything in the field like school counselor, or social worker.  Otherwise it's pretty much worthless.

  5. It would partially depend on your experience. No matter what its a college degree, which will help you at any office job. You could also get a job working as a case manager at many mental health companies. (Case management would probably barely pay above minimum wage however). If you combined it with a teaching certification, you could become an elementary school teacher, and possibly a high school teacher, if it was big enough to offer psychology courses and other "life skills" type courses. You may find some schools would hire you as some type of support staff-- not a school counselor, POSSIBLY a guidance counselor-- though that is very unlikely in most states now.

If you wanted to do PR type stuff, you could start doing that while in college and your experience could help, or you could get experience applying for grants with not for profit  companies, its also not a bad area if you want to get into criminal justice.

There are many choices, but none of them pay very well. If  its something you are interested in, I suggest you get a degree in business or in some sort of medical field and then minor in sociology. Even as the other answer suggested, you could get an MSW, or an MS in Counseling or Psychology, but the loans you rack up, compared to what you make may not be worth it to you. If you want to do counseling or Social Work, what I suggest you do is get a 4 year degree in Social Work, make good grades, and then you can complete your masters in one year.

  6. It all depends on who you know when finding a job. I have a MA in sociology and am now a research coordinator for an orthopaedic surgeon. I love my job now, but it was a rough road to get there. It took some connections to get my foot in the door.

You can do any job that solicits a degree in social science. You could work with kids, juvenile delinquents---which I did for two years. It is very rewarding, but very draining. You could work in different areas of law enforcement. If you focus your education on a research track, you could do reasearch. I recommend that path if you enjoy working with numbers and data. You could also work in certain areas of politics. The easiest route is to get your PhD and become a professor.
