What is the best way to avoid conflict at the job?

I am very quiet and do not think that joining a gossip group will earn me any positive points.

I like to do my job and nothing more but people associate my quiet attitude with being a loner or too stuffy.

I am neither!!

Are you in a similar situation? If so, what have you done to make your day better at the office or in any job?

  1. Smile often so you seem pleasent, sometimes say hi and bye so you seem approachable but when people start telling their business or trying to get into yours.. leave politely or stick to being quiet then, try not to give too much of your opinion because people may use it against you.

  2. I own a company and when my employees are gossiping I put a stop to it, it's wrong and can be damaging. Just be friendly and let people know you are not the type to gossip.

  3. i am same i do what i have to do work is work not social time and ppl i worked with were losers just forget wut they think u just do u and im a do me

  4. I'm not in the situation - I work alone at home and never yet have gossiped with myself about myself! However, I have been there and the main thing I'd say is the best "antidote" is not to give a hoot whether people think you a loner or stuffy. If they need the temporary high of putting others down to feel better about themselves, let them do so. I'll bet that eventually, if you are friendly but disinclined to gossip, one or more other employees who also don't enjoy that sort of talk, will be drawn to you.

As for the poster who puts a stop to his or her employees gossip: bottle and market your formula. All you're doing is teaching them to be more discreet about gossip. Gossip is ubiquitous and as ineradicable as cockroaches.

  5. Yes---I am a very quiet conservative person. I am there only for a job, nothing else, and if the other women/men don't like it, they can get over it because I will not join a "gossip group" for their satisfaction. The only reason I am there is for my career and to make money---nothing else.
