Question for my sociology class...kinda undecided on where to go with it. What's your opinion on the topic?

Question: Many people are concerned about the children and young teens being exposed to sexually explicit material through the internet. Two efforts to protect children, the Communications Decency Act of 1996 and the 1998 Child Online Protection Act, were found to violate the 1st Amendment. Do you think anything should be done to protect children from sexually expliciton online material? Why or why not?

If yes, how would you suggest going about it? What practical difficulties might be involved with this approach?

If no, do you forsee the issue becoming less of a concern as today's children become parents? Why or why not?

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated!!!

  1. I most definatly think children and young teens should be protected from sexually explicit material especially online. Children need to be taught boundaries and whats right and wrong don't they? and as they get older they need to be told sexual boundaries, as to morally/sexually what u can do. Hence why child pornography is illegal because ethically and morally it is wrong and of course disgusting. But when it comes to pornography in itself there are no boundaries. It sells fantasies that can sometimes lie to ppl and as we socially know pornography can be addictive. Children unlike adults cant rationalise between fact and fiction/right and wrong until they are older. So exposure to such things at a young age can be quite serious.Because children tend to copy everything they see.As adults we need to definitely keep the net safer for younger ones until the are older to perceive things in a rational way. Hope this helps u with ur question?
