Question:

Sociology question... looking glass theory?

First off I want to state that I understand the concept of the looking glass theory and for those that dont... it basically means a self-image based on how we think others see us. Now this next question is what I dont get...

On this basis, reflect on why you are at college when so many others aren’t and why you believe have achieved a level of success that others haven't.

I dont understand what is being asked, because that has nothing to do really with how I think others see me... Or am I missing something here??? Thanks!!!

  1. Hmmm...did a grad student write that question?  Anyway, look at the question this way...a substantial percentage of high school students fail to graduate high school or go on to achieve a college level degree.  Society as a whole will view you numbered among that population.  Society viewed you as a potential dropout and in that way the looking glass theory states that you imagine that judgment and develop the concept of self through that assumption.  BUT you are in college now...so answer the question on why society's view did not impact you and your decision to go to college.  What factors in your life overcame the looking glass theory for the assumption?  Does that make sense?

  2. Uhm, this has to do with a large percentage of people never graduating from high school, and the 'looking glass' effect should be that of your priviledged self, attending college.
