Sociology question on Americans?

What role can sociology play to help Americans better understand the rest of the world,

and to help the United States better understand its role in the world community?

Society, as a whole, can be more understanding and open-minded.  Less denominationally driven.  Less hiding behind an "official" position which looks good in public.

I have always believed that was the reason the United Nations, was created.

I would think that due to the diverse population of the US. and the Americans acceptance of all cultures, that the average American, has a greater understanding of the world than most others.  As to it's role in the world community that role is ever changing, and is determined by both the Executive and the Legislative branches of the government.
