Question:

Sociology vs. Psychology?

What is more influential in a person's life? Sociology or psychology? Which genre is more useful in the working world? I'm considering minors. I did a lot better in sociology but I really like both. My intended major is English. I like knowing what people think but most of that is through external experiences unless something happened to them as children or what have you. So wouldn't sociology apply to people's lives moreso than psychology? I know these are very interrelated so why then are they broken up so much in academia?

  1. Yes, Sociology applies "to peoples lives" more so  than psychology. Sociology is the study of the development, structure, and functioning of human society, or if you prefer, the study of social problems.

Psychology, on the other hand, is the scientific study of the human mind and its functions, especially those affecting behavior in a given context.

I personally don't think these two fields are "very interrelated".  True they both deal with individuals but to me they are very different.  If you are thinking of majoring in any of these two areas, I personally would choose Sociology because there is more of a need in this field.
