Socrates - Sophist, or no?

I am writing a paper on Plato's "Apology" for a political theory class (obviously quite well since I am stuck on here staring at random questions...oops?) and I started out looking at Socrates as kind of heroic figure, but by this time I am starting to think that he was just kind of a d**k.

Thoughts?
