What do you make of this statement by Socrates?

The unexamined life is not worth living.

  1. 'nosce te ipsum' - know thyself. It's a fundamental tenant of the Good Life. The idea is that you can't be truly happy unless you know yourself, and can thereby live in accordance with your inner drives and desires, or at least make peace with them. People who live unexamined lives are only using their brain-stems. They might as well be monkeys. To examine yourself is to use the ability that separates us from the other animals, namely, that we are conscious, and self-conscious. If we don't use our gifts, or our genetic fortunes, we don't deserve them.


  2. It suits some people, but others can't see the point in wasting time when they could be living it up instead.

  3. I believe it entirely. To be concious is to be alive.
