Soderling and Davydenko bow out in Beijing
Third seed Robin Soderling and fourth seed Nikolay Davydenko have lost their quarter-final matches at the China Open in Beijing.
Big-serving American John Isner outgunned Davydenko in their quarter-final match, claiming victory with a 7-6(2), 7-4 scoreline.
The unseeded Isner – destined to be forever remembered for winning that 11 hour Wimbledon epic this year – served 18 aces for the match as he ended the Russian’s tournament after one hour and 37 minutes on court.
Davydenko will now head to the Shanghai Masters 1000 next week, where the world’s top 20 players will be present, to attempt to defend the title he claimed while in the midst of a hot streak of form last year.
And while a quarter-final finish is an improvement on some of the world No. 6’s recent results after his struggles since returning from a broken wrist earlier in the season, it doesn’t suggest back-to-back Shanghai crowns are within Davydenko’s grasp.
That match was followed by another upset, when Spain’s David Ferrer overran Soderling 6-2, 6-4 to secure his place among the final four.
The news, however, was better for top seed Novak Djokovic, who ended Gilles Simon's stay in Beijing with a 6-3, 6-2 victory.
