Sofia Arvidsson trashes Arantxa Rus but fails to win the 2nd encounter of the day – Swedish Open 2012
Swede starlet, Sofia Arvidsson, rallied past the 64th ranked Dutch, Arantxa Rus, in the second round of the Sony Ericsson Swedish Open on the eve of Friday. She registered straight sets score of 6-4, 7-5 and dispatched
the 21-year-old fellow competitor back to her home.
A battle of an hour and 33 minutes witnessed a good fight from both ends. However, the deserving winner booked the berth in the quarter-final of the tournament that was to be played on the same day due to a complete washout on
Thursday.
The 55th ranked Swede commenced the match in dismal fashion and dropped the opening serve game that gave a lead to the Dutch booming starlet. However, she fought back in the following game to win a breakpoint and levelled
the scores at 1-1.
Both players traded breakthroughs in the midst of the opening set that kept the scores tied at 3-3. However, another breakpoint for the Swede star earned her the lead and she settled the scores at 5-3 with just one game from the
victory.
Rus saved two breakpoints in the following game to hold serve and kept the set alive but she couldn’t break her opponent’s serve in the following game that could have levelled the scores at allowed her a chance to win the set.
Arvidsson marched on with a set lead to her name and looked set to take a resounding 3-0 lead in the head-to-head series against the 21-year-old Dutch beauty queen.
Three back-to-back breakthroughs in the second set witnessed an early lead for the local contender who rushed away to a lead of 3-1 with a serve hold. From there on, both players capitalized on their serves and kept on running
the see-saw battle for quite some time as the scores moved to 5-4 in favour of the Swede.
The 28-year-old Swede was set to win the match with a serve hold in the following game but her rival thumped her back with a breakthrough to her name and kept the match alive. However, her serve was broken back in the following
game that allowed another chance for the Swede to win the encounter and she made no mistake in clubbing the second opportunity with both hands.
On the same day, Arvidsson went face-to-face against the seventh seed German, Mona Barthel, who was playing her first match of the day. She survived an hour and 34 minutes at the clay courts of Bastad before bowing out in straight
sets 3-6, 4-6 to the German.
