Sofia Arvidsson trounces Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez in round one – Internazionali BNL D’Italia 2012
Swedish ace, Sofia Arvidsson, plonked the Spanish veteran, Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, in straight sets at the Internazionali BNL D’Italia 2012 on Monday. She jolted down a 6-3, 6-2 success against the 29-year-old to progress into the second round at this
red clay court event taking place from 12th to 20th May in Rome.
Arvidsson broke her rival’s serve six times to trash the left-handed Spaniard in 59 minutes. The challengers previously combated each other at Bastad WTA event last circuit and after earning this success, the Swede extended her lead in the head-to-head series
by 2-0 against Martinez Sanchez at this Premier Five event.
The 28-year-old made a drastic start at Foro Italico and suffered the first blow in the opening game to trail at 0-2. However, she stayed focused and unleashed her skills to jump to a 4-2 lead. Despite losing her edge in the follow-up game, Arvidsson broke
again and pulled out the opener with a 6-3 score line.
The Swede kept momentum rolling into the second set and stroke out the opening three games in a row before Martinez Sanchez could snatch one break back. After the Spaniard held her serve for the first time in the fifth game, Arvidsson capitalised on another
break chance and subsequently clicked the set with a 6-2 win.
Summing up the 61st ranked Arvidsson performance, the Swede formulated a much better first serve share of 86 per cent as opposed to her rival’s 63 per cent and amazingly availed 24 out of 36 points on it. She also brushed off half of the six breakpoints
she faced and converted six out of eight break chances to earn the glory.
Next in line for Arvidsson is the conqueror of the match between 15th seeded Jelena Jankovic and the Romanian star, Sorana Cirstea.
The high flying Julia Goerges also stole the show later that day. She made quick in-roads and after cashing in three out of six break chances, she bagged the breadstick. The German lost her concentration in the second set but raised the bar of her game again
in the decider, ultimately carving out the victory with a 6-1, 6-7(1), 6-3 success.
