Sofia Arvidsson wins as Yanina Wickmayer retires in 1stround – Texas Open 2011
Monday, August 2011 saw the continuation of the main draw of the Texas Open 2011. Both the players had never contested prior to t his event and were meeting for the first time on hard courts of the Hilton DFW Lakes in Grapevines,
Texas. Meeting for the first time the world number 56 Sofia Arvidsson won 4-6, 6-0, 1-0 against world number 21 Yanina Wickmayer.
Arvidsson was first to take off on the scorecard, breaking Wickmayer once in the first four games to grab a 4-0 lead. She was also able to win a game by smashing 4 aces and bagged the game without any opposition. The Belgian (Wickmayer)
repeated beating her rival in the following 4 games to cut the lead and level the scores at 4-4, she then took the lead by winning consecutively to reach 6 games and bagged the set and took the lead of 1-0.
Overall the set saw Wickmayer; smash two aces, commit 5 double faults, 2 of which hit the net while the rest were foot faults. She scored an above average 59% in her total serve points along with a mediocre return of 44% win of
total return points. Although, it was a close shave between the points of the two, Wickmayer won it by three more points than Arvidsson.
In the second set both the players had perfected their serves and neither of them had struck a double fault, instead Arvidsson again smashed 4 consecutive aces to lead the game at 1-0. She then took a notch higher in her serves
and managed to attain 12 out of 15 points, making it 80% win of her total service points in the set. While, Wickmayer was unable to return her serve and bagged only 20% of her total return points won.
Fourth seeded Wickmayer not only had a poor return but an appalling serve winning only 32% of her total service points against Arvidsson who was in her groove and clenched an exceptional 68% of her returns.
Arvidsson won the second set by accomplishing a 74% win in the total set score and amassed almost three times the score as her Belgian opponent.
Amidst the second set Wickmayer had called for a medical examiner because of an excruciating pain in her low back and even though, she lost the second set she still went on to playing the first game of the third set but eventually
retired and threw the gauntlet, allowing Arvidsson to secure a berth in the second round.
