Sofia Mulanovich and Lakey Peterson emerge triumphant in Round 2 at Roxy Pro 2012
Peru’s Sofia Mulanovich and America’s Lakey Peterson prevail in Round 2 heats at Roxy Pro 2012
Peru’s Sofia Mulanovich and America’s Lakey Peterson bounced back from a Round 1 defeat at Roxy Pro 2012, an Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World Tour event, after claiming top honours in their respective Round 2 heats that went down
at Cote des Basques in Biarritz, France, on Friday, July 13.
Mulanovich barely managed to get the better of New Zealand’s Sarah Mason in the first heat of Round 2 to secure her place in the third round while bringing an early end to her rival’s competition.
The second heat saw America’s Sage Erickson succumb to her fellow countryperson Peterson, getting eliminated from the competition while sending the latter into the next round.
After failing to make a solid impact during the opening round of the competition, more than half of the competition field found themselves standing on the edge facing a do-or-die situation. The waves had improved as compared to the ones that were on offer
during the morning session, thus promising a thrilling contest.
Pitted against Mason in the first heat of Round 2, Mulanovich put on a confident performance. Locking her first business-wave halfway through the heat, she posted an impressive 7.25 points to her account. Backing it up with a 5.50-point ride, the Peruvian
surfer finished with a heat-total of 12.75 points.
Mason’s performance was pretty impressive as well. The Kiwi surfer collected a 5.50 and 6.90 off her top-two waves to finish with a heat-total of 12.40 points, conceding victory to her rival due to a 0.35-point deficit.
The second heat featured an exquisite performance by Peterson as she got the better of Erickson to secure her place in the next round. She opened her account with a heat of 6.75 points and backed it up with an 8.50-point ride to finish with a heat-total
of 15.25 points.
Erickson responded with a heat-total of 13.35 points, which included a 5.35 and 8.00-point ride, consequently getting eliminated from the competition.
The surfing action continued at Cote des Basques with the remaining Round 2 heats on the opening day of Roxy Pro 2012.
