Sofia Mulanovich prevails over Coco Ho and Jessi Miley-Dyer in Round 1 of Roxy Pro France 2011
Peru’s Sofia Mulanovich walked away with top honours from the sixth heat of Roxy Pro’s Round 1 that was held at La Grande Plage in Biarritz, South Africa, on Thursday, July 14.
She clinched the win by defeating Hawaii’s Coco Ho and Australia’s Jessi Miley-Dyer, who finished second and third respectively. While the winner of the heat went straight to the third heat, the second and third place finishers had to compete in Round 2
for a place in the Round 3.
Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World No.8, Mulanovich has been quite impressive in the current season of the Women’s World Tour. However, she is yet to collect a victory, though she came quite close in Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic that
went down in Australia during the second week of May.
The sixth heat of Round 1 kicked off in low tides, with three-to-four foot waves on offer. The Peruvian surfer seemed determined to get off to a good start and went hard during the three-woman battle. She caught a couple of really good waves in the final
minutes of the heat, earning 5.57 and 7.60 points off them, to reach a heat-total of 13.17 points. The score remained unbeatable and eventually carried her off to victory.
Ho is yet another ASP Elite who is showing good performances, but failing to go all the way due to lack of consistency. The ASP World No. 6 is yet another ASP Elite who is showing good performances but failing to go all the way due to lack of consistency.
Ho got an amazing 8.17-point wave in the middle stages of the heat, but failed to follow it up with another good score and only managed to score 3.87 points off her second wave, finishing in second place with a two-wave total of 12.04 points.
Dyer seemed to be struggling a bit during the heat and failed to make the most of the waves that she caught. Her two best waves earned her a 4.93 and 5.77 to take her to a heat-total of 10.70 points. The third place finish would definitely be a huge disappointment
for her, but she still has another opportunity to stay alive in the competition. She just needs to pick up her game a little and find her form in order to make a stronger impact in her Round 2 heat.
With the conclusion of the sixth heat, the first round of Roxy Pro finally wrapped up. It took the event more than two days to get done with the first round due to the uncooperative weather. Hopefully, the rest of the competition would go down smoothly.
