Sofia Mulanovich remains in contention at Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic following Round 2 win
Peru’s Sofia Mulanovich took a convincing victory over Brazil’s Jacqueline Silva in the fifth heat of the Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic’s Round 2 that continued at the Dee Why point in Sydney, Australia, on Friday, April 20.
With her success in Round 2, Mulanovich made her way through into the third round of the event while bringing the competition to a premature end for Silva.
Both the surfers had failed to deliver a solid performance during their respective Round 1 heats. With the competition field for the fourth of seven stops on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World Title Series loaded with immensely
skilled surfing talent, there was hardly any room for a lacklustre performance.
The Round 1 disappointment had only pushed Mulanovich and Silva into the second round, but another win-less heat meant elimination from the contention for the event title. This put both the girls under immense pressure, though they had been experiencing
plenty of that since coming across the elite surfers.
With clean four-to-six foot waves and a clear weather prevailing at the primary event site, there was sufficient opportunity for the two surfers to dig deep in their bag of tricks to pull out some of their best tricks.
As the battle for the Round 3 spot got underway, Mulanovich got off to a promising start, locking her first business-wave early in the heat to post a 6.00 on the score board. She continued her hunt for another decent score and eventually came across another
relatively juicy wave to unload a series of quick turns, earning a 6.75 for the effort and thus taking her heat-total to 12.75 points.
Silva, on the other hand, had very little luck with the waves. She had struggled to adapt to the waves and conditions on day 1 and very little had changed on the second day as far as her comfort with the sea was concerned. Managing to lock only two waves
during the course of the heat, she posted a 4.25 and 2.50 on the score-board to finish with a heat-total of 6.75 points. This forced her to concede victory and the Round 3 spot to Mulanovich.
