  1. For a Jump cue (where you're only going to jump) you want the hardest tip you can get, that would be the Pheonolic that Dave mentioned.  This is so that you can transfer the maximum amount of energy to the ball.  If it's a Jump/Break stick, you may want to put an Extra Hard or Hard leather tip on.  That is so that you can get a little more spin on the ball if you use english on your breaks.  Also not, typically you do not want the same kind of shape on a Jump/Break cue's tip that you would normally use.  The typical rounding for a cue you use regularly would be either a dime radius or a nickle radius, this usually varies by tip diameter and preference.  On a Jump/Break little flatter is better because there is less chance of the tip glancing off the ball in a miscue as long as you're aiming at the center of the ball for the angle you're shooting from.

On the cues you normally shoot with, what kind of tip you want is going to depend on what you like and what you're playing, I have a number of cues, some with multiple shafts, and while for the most part I have Moori Mediums on, it's not on all of them, I like a soft tip for straight pool, a hard tip for some of my 8 and 9 ball shots, but in general, the medium is a good spot for me to be in.

  2. I'm not sure what Shane is talking about because he couldn't be more wrong.  For a jump cue you want to use a phenolic tip which is very hard.  Also, for your shooting cue as long as you have a good stroke using a hard tip you will get more English.  Soft tips don't keep their form and you will have to reshape them after ever shot.  Good luck, and keep rackn em up!

  3. I think soft cause it can put more spin on the ball.

  4. A general rule of thumb for tips is, a hard tip if you're a hard shooter and a soft tip if you're a soft shooter. You obviously have to shoot hard when using a jump cue so I would suggest a hard tip.
