Softsong easily the best option in Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia Awareness Novices´ Hurdle at Huntingdon
Tuesday’s Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia Awareness Novices´ Hurdle at Huntingdon is really a competitive affair. It is not possible to scoff the likes of St Ignatius and Shouda, considering their wonderful achievements on the Flat.
Things, however, demand something more here. According to our calculations, Softsong and Valdez, have the best chance of dominating the proceedings. It is going to be a nerve-wracking contest between these two, and our vote goes to Softsong.
The 4-year-old was a lot better than many of these on the Flat. On his recent British hurdles debut, Philip Hobbs’ charge failed to spark, but his effort had plenty to talk about.
Coming back after a long break of almost half a year, the Andrew L. Cohen-owned showed great fight in the Lemington Maiden Hurdle at Cheltenham. It was really a tough contest, and Softsong ran well to seize the fifth place in the hands of Richard Johnson.
The 22-1 chance took keen hold early on, and led at the second hurdle. He, however, could not retain his advantage because of hitting the last fence. He soon got weakened after that, and eventually found four runners finishing ahead of him. It was an impressive act though.
Bred by Wertheimer & Frere, the son of Singspiel has got a fair idea of the British conditions, and looks open to further improvement. His biggest task will be to get the better of Valdez.
The Alan King-trained has been performing pretty consistently since the outset of his career. The 5-year-old kicked off his journey with a couple of fantastic victories. He lost his rhythm for a while, when finishing fourth at Newbury in March.
Owned by Riverdee Stable, the son of Doyen quickly got his act together, and claimed the second place in a close contest last month. He missed the gold only by a neck’s distance.
Both runners are fully determined to do the goods, and we don’t expect anyone to challenge their dominance. Over a distance of two miles and 110 yards, thirteen horses will compete for a prize of £2,534. The class 4 meeting is due to get underway at 14:10 GMT.
