Sol Kyu Choi earns spot in second round of 2012 Malaysia International Youth Championships
Korea’s Sol Kyu Choi employed all of his brilliance in the game and cleared the first hurdle in Maybank Malaysia International Youth U19 Badminton Championships on September 11, 2012.
He intercepted June Wei Cheam in the local badminton arena of Kuala Lumpur and setup his next clash with another Malaysian campaigner Shahrul Shazwan in the second round of this International Championships.
This Men’s Singles encounter kept both contenders head-to-head for 43 minutes before ending with decisive figures of 21-14, 14-21 and 21-11.
The victorious shuttler raised his hands as victor after sealing a 2-1 victory. The native shuttler could live his moment of glory only in the middle of the battle.
Kyu Choi, who is an unseeded player in this tournament, elevated his chances of success by clinching very first match point.
However, there was lot of drama in the opening game as both contenders snapped at each other’s heels all the way to mid-game break and neither of them could gain a comfortable lead.
They were standing close on points table with 11-9 when the Korean shuttler made the difference by prevailing in a couple of consecutive rallies.
He strengthened his grip by adding six points in his total after 13-11 and then swept the table with an overwhelming margin of 21-14.
The second set was a replay of the previous one but this time it was Wei Cheam’s turn to enjoy the upper hand. He gained an early advantage and then maintained this lead until game point situation.
He got into commanding position by registering a notable figure of 9-2 and then doubled the impact with 15-10 in the third quarter of the set.
At this stage, Kyu Choi showed some class but it was not enough to stop the Malaysian from bagging the second set with a 21-14 score.
The decider remained interesting until the opening rallies as it was a one-sided affair in latter part of the game.
In the beginning, Wei Cheam brought life into contest by ruling the court in five rallies without any interruption.
However, he failed to maintain this rhythm and faltered which ultimately resulted in his early exit from the home event.
Kyu Choi played with great precision and secured a berth in the next round with an amazing knock of 21-11.
