I live in Atlanta, Georgia. Will I be able to see the solar eclipse today? If so at what time? And do I need a filter?

  1. Hi Alexis,

You'd be able to see the total eclipse the afternoon of August 21, 2017.  It will be total across much of South Carolina, including Columbia and Charleston.

If it's any consolation, nobody else saw a total eclipse in the United States today.  The eclipse could only be seen from far northern Maine and the north slope of Alaska, and then only as a smidgen of the partial eclipse.

If you'd like to see a partial eclipse at least as good as people in Maine saw today, Georgia gets the very end of a partial eclipse at sunrise on November 3rd, 2013.  At Savannah, for instance, the sun rises at 6:50 a.m. Eastern Standard Time with 13% of the solar disc covered.  There's another at sunset October 23, 2014, but again it's a small partial eclipse for georgia.  The best show will be over South Carolina in 2017.

  2. No.  The eclipse is over.  You would have had to live somewhere around Siberia.  Atlanta is nowhere near Siberia.  You will have to wait for the 2017 eclipse.   That will be visible across a large part of the US. Sorry.
