We have a new custom size pool that is heated by a electric heat pump. Was wondering if we should consider a solar cover or even converting to solar heat pump? What are best options?

  1. If you paint the pool a dark color, you would be amazed how much warmer the water gets. The dark color reflects less sunlight and heats the water.

  2. A solar cover will cut heating costs but a solar heater is the ticket...especially if you live in a place with a lot of sun...like Arizona

  3. In Florida, there is a solar pool heater that works in conjunction with the pool pump system.  It is attached in-line and circulates the water inside of a box that is set up kind of like a greenhouse.  It does a pretty good job of keeping the water warm and is relatively maintenance-free.

  4. Here are two good links to see how to do this.

MEN has many DIY projects on how to do it.

Home Power has info, but is geared towards contractors doing the work.

  5. www.solarhome.org

    www.motherearthnews.com

My neighbor built one himself over the summer. It's quite intrusive however, so there may be other options.

  6. You are using precious, ever scarcer water for a swimming pool????    For your own personal entertainment????   Shall we ban residential swimming pools too, while we are wanting to ban guns, hunting, incandescent bulbs, real Xmas trees, smoking, SUVs, gasoline powered leaf blowers and lawn mowers, lawns, plastic bags, "exotic" hardwoods, logging, thinning, fireplaces, road salt, beauty contests........and on and on and on?

  7. Call all your local contractors in your area.
