  1. Photovoltaics take the radiative energy of the sun and convert it to electrical energy with about 20% efficiency.  The power you receive from the sun is attenuated by the atmosphere and is different at varying lattitudes, but the peak output is about 1.5 kW/m².  So you can harvest enough energy to run about 3-5 100 Watt lightbulbs from 1 m² panel at noon.

Any excess energy is sent to the grid to be used elsewhere.

  2. Solar power (Eco-tricity) takes the suns rays and  the panel turns them into a DC current.  That current is then stored into a series of batteries in your "battery bank" it charges your bank. To use that energy ; you can run a 12 volt system Like what is in an older camper or covert it with an inverter for conventional home use. It is an environmentally friendly system until your "Battery Bank" fails and you need to replace your batteries.( They should be disposed at a hazard waste depot.)

There is a lot to learn other than put up a solar panel and use it.  I would strongly suggest reading a book by William Kent ; "Rural guide to off grid living."  You also should learn about HOW MUCH  electricity you use everyday. Also remember that anything with a remote on/off (t.v, VCR, stereo) is still on, even if you turned it off. It is on "standby" using almost as much power as if it was turned off.

Good luck !!!! The information in William Kent's book will be so use full that you will find yourself picking it up again and again
