I need to know how much you would save if you purchased solar panels to completely cover heat, electricity, and water heating in a typical independent home in canada. I pay 3000 a year.

  1. I designed and built my own hot water solar system to heat my home. I have in-floor heat tubes in my floors and a 1200 gallon hot water storage tank in my basement. This cost me about $12,000.

To provide all of the electricity I use I would need to spend at least $30,000 and this wouldn't provide me with an air conditioner (which is needed in Kansas).

My rough estimate is that for 50-60 thousand dollars my home could be "off the grid".

Bottom line is that it doesn't pay. I did mine just to see if I could and to free myself partially from the control of others in heating my home.

  2. Depending upon the size of your home, it could cost as much as $50,000 to convert all of your home energy needs over to solar. As a result, you will need to live in the home for many years before it pays you back. There are govt rebates, but not enough to put a significant dent in your investment. You can get away with it if you are living in an area where people are LOOKING for green homes...ie Seattle

  3. not exact, but you would save, regardless

  4. You would need to look at your bill. How many KWH do you use per month?  What is the difference between summer and winter. Power must be designed to handle the max amount +10%..

A good system would most likely cost you $50,000.00US  what would the payback period be?   20 years?

  5. haha, you would pay about 10,000 just to get that stuff, but it may be a good investment if you aren't in a consistently cloudy area.

Don't worry about "going green," its all a money-making scam and a fad, it will wear off eventually.
